Gamera by TheDaiOni Gamera by TheDaiOni
Here's my Gamera. Fan art isn't normally my thing, so this will be my last non-original daikaiju piece for a while. I guess I should really do a Godzilla somewhere down the track.

Here is the initial doodle from my small sketchbook:

Gamera is © Daiei Motion Picture Company/Kadokawa Pictures.

Wow, what a fantastic piece . The coloring is amazing and your stylistic approach to the character is inspiring. I can't wait to see more of your work.

The recent trio of daikaiju / giant monster pieces you've done are just fantastic, and although Hedorah is my all time favorite character from the Godzilla films, your Gamera here remains the best of the trio. I also love your original creation the Astro King.

I hope you continue this colorful series, and if you need any image references of said kaiju characters, by all means ask, and I'll see what I can do to help.

Those are very kind words, thank you so much!

I'm planning on doing a series of three original kaiju designs, which will eventually become limited run toys (if for no other reason than for me to realise some of my characters as tangible pieces of vinyl). I'll be sure to post any imagery related to the project as I complete it.

And thank you for your kind offer of kaiju reference images. I'll try not to bother you, but I will certainly seek your assistance if I run into any obstacles!

Curious with the original vinyl kaiju; will they have some back-story related to them, or they'll just be there for the sake of being there, like a lot of the similar vinyl figures? I love giant monsters, but the lack of character or story makes the whole deal feel empty for me. At least design wise, I know that yours will be awesome though!

Oh, bother me when ever you'd like; I have a big library of images, and there are many characters that would look awesome in your style. However, to be fair, I will let you decide who you want to do, and hold off on personal suggestions. Even if you don't continue such a series, as least Gamera and Hedorah benefited from your talent, and they are two of the coolest giants ever IMO!

Thanks for mentioning, and I wholeheartedly agree with you - I do intend for my original guys to have back-stories, but they exist as fragments in my sketchbook at the moment. Once I finish off my third design, I'm going to devote some time to fleshing out their histories. It's a pie-in-the-sky notion at the moment, but I'm hoping to bridge what I see as a gap between some contemporary urban/designer vinyl kaiju and their original, tokusatsu-based older siblings.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with me! I really appreciate it, and hope we can have future discussions!
